Monks Making a Mandala

Before a festival at Rumtek Monastery, a sacred mandala is traced in sand on the floor of the temple. The process of constructing a mandala--a diagram of the cosmos--takes up to a week. First, concentric rings are fashioned in chalk. Then, starting from the center, monks meticulously fill in every centimeter of the diagram with colored sand to create an intricate and complex mosaic full of spiritual significance.
