Harijans

Every morning Harijans, or ‘children of God,’ sweep and wash the ancient cobblestone streets of Jaisalmer, a 12th century citadel city. From across the desert, the impressive honey-colored sandstone fortress which dominates the horizon appears as a mirage--like a timeless scene from A Thousand and One Nights. Elaborate stone haveli mansions grace the inside of the fort as well as humble dwellings with brightly painted walls.
