Dhamekh Stupa at Sarnath

Ten kilometers from Varanasi in Sarnath, the 30-meter-tall Dhamekh Stupa towers over a woman passerby. Sarnath, where Buddha preached his Dharma Chakra, or ‘wheel of law’ sermon which laid the foundation for the religion he founded, is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in the world. The stupa’s current form dates to 500 A.D.
