Golden Harvest in the Clouds

Tanah Toraja, 'Land of the Torajan Peoples' is one of Indonesia's most ruggedly magnificent and bountiful regions. The mountain range which runs down the spine of Sulawesi acts as a natural weather barrier, as the east and west slopes receive monsoon rains at different times of the year. Torajans inhabit the central highlands, working successive harvests of rice and maize nurtured by the rich volcanic soil. Enormous boulders pitched during volcanic eruptions punctuate the fields. Their presence is a reminder of the equally destructive power that resides in the belly of this fertile land.
